Ely is considered a Pinoy rock icon and was part of the legendary group Eraserheads that Francis Magalona called “the most significant OPM band of Pinoy rock,” but he doesn’t even consider himself a “rock” person.
According to front man Ely Buendia, they shot the scenes for the video last Good Friday and Black Saturday, thinking there would be small number of cars on the streets then.
“Even so the streets were surprisingly still filled with cars,” he said.
“Pagans,” Pupil guitarist Yan Yuzon chimed in.
“Heathens,” Ely rejoined in jest.
For the scene in Guadalupe, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) had to stop traffic for two minutes in order for the band to “play” right on EDSA as cameras rolled.
“It was the longest two minutes of our lives,” Yuzon said, grinning. “Nung pina-‘go’ yung mga sasakyan, wala namang nagmura sa amin, no lascivious hand signs.”
“At wala namang naaksidente,” Ely added.
The video for “20/20” shows Ely taking photos using a strange-looking camera while he was walking on a deserted EDSA. On the latter part of the video, the band is shown performing on a still-empty EDSA, followed by shots of cars driving by behind them.
“20/20” is a track off Pupil’s third Sony BMG album, “Limiters of the Infinity Pool.” It features DJ/guitarist Francis Reyes as guest session musician, who they got spur of the moment.
“He was hanging out with us in the studio and we thought his style would be perfect for the song. Apparently, things fell into place,” Yanni said.
A line in the song (“I wish I could see the world through your eyes”) ties up the concept of the video. Asked to elaborate on what it means, Ely simply said, “You have to figure it out for yourself. It’s an open letter to the universe.”
